The Black Label wines are an experimental range where we can really flex our creative winemaking muscle.
We set about making a Chardonnay here that was very different to our 'White Label' range. How?
We've challenged ourselves on style.
We've taken a journey of self-education over recent times, to understand Chardonnay styles from around our region and the world.
This alternate direction reflects those learnings.
Although from the same raw material, we've chosen select barrels to skew onto a tangent of tight, focussed acidity, matched with long lees contact and high levels of MLF (85%).
The result is a wine that needs your patience to unfurl, but as it does the added effort is guaranteed to pay off.
The opening is the white nectarine, honeydew melon, lemon meringue. Immediately you know you're in Chardonnay land. Looking deeper you'll see honeysuckle and beeswax, adding to those layers of complexity.
Once on the palate, the acidity reveals itself and leads the lemon drop and orange blossom varietal characters, especially prevalent from this vineyard site. The mid to finish delivers a waxy/lanolin texture, countering that driving acidity for balance and length.
